What is my Long-Term Disability (LTD) Coverage?
Your LTD coverage provides a benefit equal to 70% of your pre-disability monthly earnings (max of $20,000) if, after the first 150 calendar days of disability, you are unable to work due to illness or injury.
In order to be entitled to the benefit, you must prove that you are unable to do the duties of your own occupation.
Any LTD benefit you receive while disabled is taxable. The benefit is taxable because your employer pays a portion of your LTD coverage, which makes it an employment benefit.
Offsets apply to your disability benefit. The most common write-offs are Workers’ Compensation Board payments, Canada Pension Plan disability, and Canada Pension retirement benefits.
Coverage will be paid until 5 months prior to your 65th birthday, or five months prior to the year that you attain 30 years of pensionable services in the Nova Scotia Health Employees’ Pension Plan (NSHEPP) and you are at least 60 years of age; or at retirement.
